En Guarde

In fencing, the referee will say 'en guarde' or on-guard in english. This signals for the fencers to be in position (thanks google).

2 John 1:8-9 says "Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching has both the Father and the Son"

John is referring to deceivers as he calls them. Those who are consumed by worldly desires. John is telling us to be 'en guarde' against evil. He is calling us to stay in the Word, live a righteous life but always be ready to face temptation. To face moments you're not proud of.

If we are acting out of love John writes in verse 6 "this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard in the beginning, his command is that you walk in love". That sums up this whole post. If we are always acting in love, then it makes sense that we are walking in His commands.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’" (Matthew 22:37-39)
